7 Graceful Ways to Say No to a Drink (Without Saying the Word ‘No’)

“Are you sure you don’t want a drink?”

I know that awkward feeling when someone offers you a drink—the twinge of guilt for turning down what feels like a kind gesture, or the anxious thought that others might judge you when you ask for a tonic water instead.

Saying no to a drink can feel hard, especially if the people around you are used to your easy yes at every pour.

So, how do you turn down a drink without guilt or making it awkward?

My short answer: 

My short answer is a little truth bomb: most people care way less about what’s in our glass than we think. A simple and firm “no, thanks” is usually enough. And just having a non-alcoholic drink already in your hand will head off most offers. You might be surprised how often people assume that Diet Coke is rum and Coke.


But I don’t want to just give you a short answer. In this blog, I want to offer you some practical tools for the art of saying no gracefully—not just to alcohol, but to anything in life that doesn’t light you up.

The Art of Saying No to a Drink (or Anything) Without Guilt

It’s a much-needed skill that no one taught us in school. The truth is, most of us struggle with saying no—not just to alcohol, but in general.

But once we begin to master it, we often discover that a clear no is more gracious than a half-hearted yes. And there’s more than one way to decline an invitation with conviction and care—without even saying the word “no.”

Saying no gracefully is a skill. And like any skill, it can be learned and practiced.

One of my favorite “say no” guides is the No Repertoire from Greg McKeown’s book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. In it, he offers eight practical ways to say no with clarity and grace. Today, I’ll walk you through Greg’s teaching—and show you how to use each of his approaches to gracefully turn down a drink.

Smart and Simple Ways to Decline a Drink in Any Social Setting

1. The awkward pause 

This might be the simplest option, though it takes a bit of practice. Silence can feel awkward, or even threatening. But once you learn to be okay with it, it becomes a wonderful tool.

Simply count to three before delivering your answer. Not only does this help you practice saying slower yeses, but it also gives the other person the impression that you’ve took time to consider their offer before turning it down.

When offered a drink, I sometimes just tilt my head for three silent seconds, then say, “Thank you, but not for me tonight.”

2. The soft “no but” 

This one might be my favorite. When I get an invitation from someone I genuinely like, but the activity itself doesn’t light me up, I’ll often say something like:

 “I am consumed with some existing commitment during (the time of the invitation), but I would love to get together (proposing something that we might both enjoy). Let me know if you are interested.” 

When it comes to drinks, a soft “no but” might sound like: 

“I need a clear head in the morning, but I’d love a sparkling water if you have one.”

3. “Let me check my calendar and get back to you.” 

This phrase was a game-changer for me. Once I learned it, it quickly became my new go-to. It gives me the time to pause and consider my own needs and desires and keeps me from rushing into a yes I would later regret. 

Of course, I’m not suggesting you pull out your calendar every time someone offers you a drink. A simple adaptation might be:

“Let me think about what I need to do tomorrow morning first.”

Then pause, tilt your head, and do a slow count to three in your head.

4. Using automatic replies 

In Essentialism, Greg McKeown talks about setting up an email auto-reply titled “In Monk Mode” that reads:

“Dear friends, I’m currently working on a new book, which has put enormous demands on my time. Unfortunately, I’m unable to respond in the manner I’d like. For this, I apologize. —Greg”

Obviously, I am not proposing you to set an out-of-office message to turn down a drink—but the idea of a prepared, automatic response still applies.

Before going to a party, you might decide on something simple like:

  • “I’m on a medication that doesn’t mix well with alcohol.”

  • “I’m trying a new diet that has a strict no-alcohol rule.”

  • “I’ve decided to take a break from drinking, just to see how it feels.”
     

5. Say “Yes. What should I deprioritize?” 

This one is gold in work settings. Saying no to a manager or senior leader can feel impossible. But when it’s done with thoughtfulness and responsibility, it can actually earn us respect. 

In the book, Greg gives this example: if your manager asks you to take on Project X, you can respond with:

“Yes, I’m happy to prioritize that. Which of my other projects would you like me to deprioritize to make room for this?”

When it comes to a drink, a playful version of this might be:

“I’d love to have one—but only if we can find someone else to be the designated driver tonight.

6. “Nope” (With Humor)

Often, when we treat something like it’s no big deal, others will, too.

If you’re close with the person offering, you can just say:

“Nope. Not for me,” with a wink.

And if they press, can smile and joke:

“Pretty sure I lost my drinking privileges after what happened last time."

7. “I can’t do it, but X might be interested.” 

This one is meant to remind us that we don’t have to be everyone’s solution.

If someone makes a request that doesn’t align with your priorities, it’s okay to point them toward someone who might be a better fit.

That said, when it comes to turning down a drink, I’d be careful about pointing at any one guest. A simple equivalent might be:

“I can’t tonight, but someone over there might be ready for a refill.”

And gesture toward a group already enjoying their drinks.

We learn from our missteps, and the initial discomfort is gradually replaced by confidence. TL;DR: 7 Ways to turn down a drink gracefully

Because saying no doesn’t have to feel weird—or apologetic.

  1. The Awkward Pause: Silence speaks. Count to three, then say: “Thanks, but not for me tonight.”

  2. The Soft “No, But…”: Decline kindly while offering an alternative: “I’m staying clear-headed tonight, but I’d love a ginger beer.”

  3. “Let Me Check My Calendar”:  A built-in buffer: “Let me see what I have tomorrow first…” (Gives you space to pause and decide.)

  4. The Auto-Reply Trick: Create a go-to response: “I’m on a no-alcohol reset this month—trying something new!”

  5. “Yes… So What Should I Deprioritize?”: For professional settings: “I can drive tonight, but someone else would need to be DD.”

  6. The Confident, Casual “Nope”: Sometimes a light tone works wonders: “Nope. Not tonight.” (Wink optional.)

  7. “Not Me, But Maybe Someone Else”: Redirect with grace: “I’m good, but I bet someone else might be ready for a top-up!”
