Vol.1 Temptation: it’s not what you think
Living in a time that glamorizes alcohol, cutting down or quitting can feel like going against the grain.
Everywhere you look, there seems to be temptation.
Have you ever wished you could flip a switch and just turn it off?
I know I did—though I never found one.
But have you ever stopped to wonder where that temptation actually comes from?
For a long time, I thought it came from…
-
The 24-hour corner liquor store
-
The champagne tray at a social gathering
-
The flashy alcohol ad across town
…until 2018, when I was newly sober and went to a holiday party with my sister.
Just like every other holiday party, booze was everywhere.
Every time I looked, someone was pouring wine, holding a cocktail, or laughing mid-cheers.
And the whole time, I was miserable.
My mouth was watering.
I kept thinking, “Ugh, this is hard.”
It felt like I was fighting an invisible battle the entire night.
On the drive home, I turned to my sister and said,
“That was tough. Why is everyone always drinking?”
She looked at me, paused, and said,
“Was it? I didn’t even notice. I was having a Cherry Coke.”
That moment made something click.
If alcohol was everywhere, why was I the only one struggling?
Same party. Same people. Same wine glasses.
But two completely different experiences.
My sister wasn’t fighting.
I was.
So maybe temptation doesn’t come from the world around us.
Maybe it comes from something within us.
What if the pull isn’t about the drink… but about something we believe it gives us?
More on that soon. 🌱
Rooting for you,
Jeanette
