Vol.2 We drink for a reason—here’s what it is
In my last email, I told you about the holiday party that made me realize something big:
The pull to drink wasn’t coming from the world around me.
It was coming from something within.
So what is it, exactly?
Nope—it’s not a broken brain or a defective genie. (We don’t buy into that here at SCS.)
Here, we believe the pull comes from our beliefs—about what we think alcohol will do for us.
Here’s something most people miss:
We don’t crave alcohol for the liquid itself.
Sometimes, not even for the buzz.
We crave it for what we’ve learned to believe it can give us.
A nightcap to fall asleep?
🍷 Belief: “Alcohol helps me sleep better.”
Temptation: “I want a drink before bed.”
A drink at the party?
🥂 Belief: “Alcohol will make this more fun.”
Temptation: “Pour me a shot so I can have a good time.”
A glass of wine after a long day?
🍷 Belief: “Alcohol helps me relax.”
Temptation: “I want a glass of wine to unwind.”
You see, we’re not reaching for the drink because we’re irrational.
We reach for it for very rational reasons—
Because we believe that bottle holds something we want…
Or something that will help us avoid what we don’t want to feel.
So here’s a little truth bomb to sit with today:
👉 Behind every craving is a perceived benefit.
Not necessarily a real one.
But always a perceived one.
And that belief is where temptation gets its fuel.
Which is actually really good news. (More on that next time 😉)

Rooting for you,
Jeanette
