Vol 27. Are you a nightcap person?
“Have a beer before bed, and it will help.”
I remember my roommate told me this after I teared up about the endless sleepless nights after my first breakup.
I tried it the same night.
It worked like a charm.
Half a beer later, I fell into a dreamless slumber the moment my head hit the pillow.
I was 15.
That was when I discovered alcohol’s “sleeping aid” property.
From then on, I became a regular at the 7-Eleven two blocks away from my high school, picking up my self-prescribed sleeping med every few days.
And the nightcap ritual became a decade-long practice.
Only toward the end of my drinking career did I start to notice something puzzling.
Despite routinely getting 10-plus hours of “deep sleep” at night, I was regularly exhausted.
Each morning, I dragged myself out of bed, clinging to that first cup of coffee as if it were a lifesaver.
At the tail end of my 20s, I concluded that this must be what getting old feels like.
Only after I became alcohol-free and experienced fresh bursts of energy in the mornings did I realize that my chronic exhaustion had little to do with my age and more to do with my decade-long “sleeping aid.”
That’s why in the upcoming micro-doses, we will dive into the science behind nightcaps.
Hit reply and let me know—are you a nightcap person?
