Vol.45 Question #3 &4: The Pain & The Desire
Last week, we explored the first two big questions I ask all my new clients:
Question #1: What do you love about drinking?
Question #2: What are you afraid of about not drinking—or not being able to drink as much as you want?
Those two questions explore one side of the equation:
Why is letting go of alcohol so hard?
Now we turn to the other side:
Why do you still want to let it go—even though it’s hard?
There are always two sides to this equation.
If there weren’t, the decision would be easy—you’d just keep drinking the way you do.
In psychology, we call this ambivalence—that sticky place where you both want and don’t want something at the same time.
It’s not unique to quitting drinking.
Ambivalence shows up anytime we’re standing on the edge of change.
And the most effective way to move through it is to look at all sides honestly.
That brings us to Question #3:
What hurts you about drinking the way you do today?
What are the reasons you’re here—reading this email, on this list—despite the things you enjoy about alcohol and the things you’re afraid of losing?
Now, once we’ve looked at what hurts, we also need to look forward.
Because letting go isn’t just about releasing pain—it’s about reclaiming possibility.
So here’s Question #4:
What excites you about building a life where alcohol becomes small and irrelevant?
When we’re on the verge of outgrowing something, it’s easy to focus on the loss—
or let the “shoulds” take over and focus only on what might happen if we don’t change.
But the real goal of letting go isn’t about what you’re missing.
It’s about creating a life that genuinely excites you.
In other words, the purpose of letting go of alcohol isn’t just to quit drinking.
It’s to reclaim the space alcohol has been taking up—so you can experience more joy, freedom, and fulfillment.
Today, I invite you to make a list of everything that excites you about a life where alcohol is small and irrelevant:
-
What positive changes could come from a life where alcohol takes up less space?
-
How would it feel to move through your day without thinking about drinking?
-
What excites you about having more time, money, and energy when alcohol is no longer dragging you down?
