5 Simple Questions to Uncover the Invisible Drinking Loop That Keeps You Stuck

People often think an unwanted drinking pattern is driven by alcohol alone.

Through my years of work, I discovered that a drinking pattern is most often fueled by four invisible forces, and together, they form what I came to call the Invisible Drinking Loop.

Force #1 - Unnamed Needs

Most problem drinkers don’t have a drinking problem.  They have a drinking solution.

Question #1:

What are the top three ways drinking helps you feel, act, or be different in life?

Force #2 - Unexamined Beliefs

To truly become free from alcohol’s hold, most people don’t need more willpower; they need to learn how to rewrite the temptation-fueling beliefs.

Question #2:

What are the top three things you believe you are giving up by letting go of alcohol?

Force #3: Automated Routines

To truly outgrow an old drinking pattern, the goal is not to remove alcohol from life, but to replace it with skills and tools that fulfill the same purpose that the drinking routines once served in their life.

Question #3:

What are the top three purposes your drinking routine serves in your life?

Force #4: Limiting Narratives

What keeps many people stuck in the same drinking pattern is not just alcohol itself,
but the story they tell themselves about the challenges and struggles with alcohol

Question #4:

When you struggle to cut down or quit drinking, what stories are you telling yourself?

Seeing the Bigger Picture

If these four invisible forces are what keep the loop alive, then lasting change requires addressing more than alcohol itself.

Question #5:

Now that you've explored these four forces, how has your understanding of your past attempts to quit or cut down changed?
