Why Do I Drink When I'm Stressed? How Alcohol Actually Makes Stress Worse

Aug 09, 2026

If you've ever watched Grey's Anatomy, you know the scene. Whether it was a patient dying, a surgery going wrong, or someone's marriage falling apart, nearly every emotionally devastating episode ends with Meredith, Cristina, Derek, or the others gathering at Joe's Bar. The unspoken message comes through the screen loud and clear: “Alcohol helps decompress stress.”

Why do I drink when I'm stressed?

Stress is naturally uncomfortable. It activates your body's threat response, creating a strong desire to find relief. Growing up, many of us also learned—through movies, family, friends, and our own experience—that alcohol quickly eases the uncomfortable feelings of stress. Over time, our brains begin to associate stress with drinking, making alcohol feel like the natural solution whenever life becomes overwhelming.

Growing up, drinking to cope with stress was a normalized practice in our culture, whether it’s in TV shows or in real life. In my own life, it was once my go-to response whenever I felt stressed by life. Whether it was an approaching deadline, an unexpected bill, an unpleasant argument, or even the dirty dishes piling up in the sink at the end of the day, my default was to reach for the bottle. “Thank goodness for the drink; I wouldn’t know how to handle all this stress if it wasn’t for it,” I’d think to myself.

What I didn’t know back then was that while a drink helps make the stress feel more manageable in the moment, over time, it keeps me stuck in what I have come to call the Avoidance-Compound Trap.

I wish I had known sooner about the triple compound effect alcohol can have on our lives when drinking becomes our default response to stress.

Does Drinking Actually Reduce Stress?

Here is the thing: a drink may be able to remove stressors from our minds; it never removes them from our lives. It simply allows us to avoid facing what stresses us out. When the effect of alcohol wears off the next morning, the dishes are still dirty, the bills are still unpaid, and the argument is still unresolved.

Making matters worse:

  • On top of the dirty dishes, there is now a hangover to nurse.
  • On top of the unpaid bills, there is now a new charge from last night's bar tab.
  • And on top of the original argument, there is now further damage to the relationship from the hurtful words after the third glass of wine.

When we drink to take the stressors off our minds, instead of disappearing, they tend to grow larger and larger like a snowball the morning after.

How Alcohol Changes the Way You Respond to Stress

To make the bad news even worse, studies suggest that chronic alcohol consumption can impair our brain's ability to adapt to and recover from stressful experiences.

For instance, in 2012, a group of researchers at the NIAAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism) spent several weeks exposing laboratory mice to alcohol. Afterwards, they taught the mice that a particular tone predicted a mild foot shock. Before long, hearing the tone alone was enough to stress out the poor mice. The researchers then repeatedly played the same tone without delivering the shock, giving the mice a chance to learn that the danger had passed.

The control group—the mice that had not been exposed to alcohol—gradually realized they were safe and stopped becoming stressed at the sound of the tone. The alcohol-exposed mice, however, continued to experience a stress response (freezing) even after the threat had long passed.

In other words, not only does drinking do little to remove the sources of stress from our lives, but it may also interfere with our ability to recognize when a threat has passed.

How Alcohol Becomes a Source of Stress

Finally, when alcohol becomes the default response to the inevitable stress we face in everyday life, it often starts to create its own set of stress:

  • Health concerns from excessive consumption.
  • Relationship tension from concerned family members.
  • Compromised performance at work.

Not to mention the unique stress of managing cravings, the exhausting internal debate about whether to drink or not to drink, and the shame and self-loathing spiral the morning after. Those are the feelings I knew all too well towards the end of my drinking career. At some point, what started as a strategy to cope with stress had become, in itself, a major source of stress.

How Stress Drinking Becomes a Vicious Cycle

When we attempt to seek relief from the stress in our lives through drinking, we are simply delaying facing it through avoidance. While it offers us a temporary sense of relief, the unintended long-term result is that the stress accumulates and compounds, and we feel less and less equipped to cope with it.

The Avoidance-Compound Trap has kept me, and many clients I have worked with, in a stress-drinking loop, where a stressful event leads to the habitual response of drinking, and drinking, in turn, creates more stress that requires more drinking to cope. It creates a vicious cycle and keeps feeding into itself.

What is the Avoidance Compound Trap?

The Avoidance-Compound Trap is an invisible trap that forms when drinking becomes our default way of coping with stress. While alcohol can temporarily take stress off our minds, it doesn't remove it from our lives.

As we postpone dealing with life's challenges, the original stressors often accumulate, while drinking creates new sources of stress of its own. Over time, we become trapped in a cycle where drinking to relieve stress ultimately creates more stress that requires more drinking to cope.

How to Break the Stress-Drinking Loop

A stress-drinking loop is an Invisible Drinking Loop that keeps a person stuck in the same unwanted drinking pattern. In an Invisible Drinking Loop, drinking first starts as an attempt to solve another issue in our lives, and it often does work in the moment. But over time, it perpetuates the problem we drink to solve.

For most regular drinkers, the stress-drinking loop is only one of the loops that keep their drinking pattern alive. The first step to outgrowing an unwanted drinking pattern is to make these invisible loops visible. If you would like to explore deeper, you can learn more about the Invisible Drinking Loop here

Key Takeaways

  • We are naturally motivated to seek relief from stress.
  • Through observation and experience, many of us learn to see alcohol as a way to find relief from stress.
  • Alcohol can temporarily relieve the symptoms of stress, but it doesn't remove the source of the stress.
  • Over time, drinking can create new sources of stress and may make it harder to cope with stress.
  • Repeatedly using alcohol to cope with stress can create a Stress-Drinking Loop.
  • Breaking the loop isn't simply about stopping drinking; it's about learning new ways to cope with stress.
